Welcome to our March Program Meeting! 

We have a very special Panel Presentation program schedule for March.  For this month's program we will have leaders presenting their views of the pharmaceutical industry from four key perspectives - Owner, Vendor, Analyst and Academia.

With all of the changes the industry has experienced, and continues to experience, this will be an excellent opportunity to get feedback and projections from some of top people in their respective fields.  This will be an exciting event that you will not want to miss.

Program Topic Summary
 

The meeting will be a Discussion Panel format.  Panelists from different areas of our industry will be represented to give the State of the Pharmaceutical Industry. Each member of the panel will give a 5 to 10 minute presentation of their perspective on the state of our industry (Past, Present, and Future).  Then we will turn the discussions to the floor and allow our guests to ask the panel questions.  

Currently our panel consists of the following individuals:

 

  1. Kathye Johnson - VP Operations Jacobs Phila Office
  2. Bob Pragada - Group VP Jacobs Phila Office
  3. George Cusick - Merck
  4. Dr. William Kelly - Professor in Chemical Engineering and Coordinator of Pharmaceutical Engineering Concentration - Villanova University
  5. Mark Hassenplug - Ernst & Young

 

Our Moderator will be Chuck Clerecuzio who is a Senior Consultant at AMEC and also our ISPE Delaware Valley Chapter Vice President.

 

Mark Hassenplug of Ernst and Young will provide us with an overview of the current economic climate and in particular how it relates to the pharmaceutical industry.  He will provide some insight into the financial struggles today's pharmaceutical companies are dealing with and discuss the trend towards mergers, acquisitions and buyouts.

 

George Cusick of Merck will provide some insight from a Manufacturer's and Owner's perspective on what his needs are in today's changing landscape for his company.  He will discuss the challenges he is facing in these economic times, how he is looking to address these challenges and how they will do business with supporting service companies to meet these future challenges.

 

Kathye Johnson and Bob Pragada will provide us with there insight from an A&E perspective.  They will discuss the recent trends as seen from the service side of the business related to buying habits of customers, key value drivers and ways service type businesses are responding to recent changes in the economy and pharmaceutical business landscape.

 

Dr. William Kelly Professor and Coordinator of Chemical Engineering students pursuing a concentration in Pharmaceutical Engineering at Villanova University will wrap up the brief presentations with some insight into the ways the Academia is address the current industry conditions.  He will discuss the new challenges students and professors are encountering, the innovative approaches to addressing these challenges and the ways our academic institutions are ensuring there is a continued flow of high quality graduates for our industry.  He will also discuss some exciting innovations for our industry that is occurring in research labs.

Speakers Bios

 

Charles A. Clerecuzio, PE, CPIP is Vice President, PharmBio & Chemicals with AMEC Power & Process Americas, an engineering, construction and compliance consulting company.  He has responsibility for the strategy and project execution for Pharmaceutical, Biotech and Chemical projects in the Americas.  He has over 23 years experience in the Pharma / Biotech industry and has held management and line positions at both engineering consulting and operating companies.  Chuck is licensed Professional Engineer and one of the first six Certified Pharmaceutical Industry Professionals (CPIP's).  He has a BA if Zoology (specializing in Molecular Biology) and MS in Chemical & Biochemical Engineering, both from Rutgers University, as well as an MBA in Finance and Operations from The Stern School of Business at New York University.  He is a member of AIChE, PMI and ACS.  He is a Visiting professor in Chemical Engineering at Rowan and Rutgers and on the Industrial Advisory Board for Chemical Engineering for University of Akron, Rutgers and Rowan.  Chuck has been an ISPE member for more than 19 years and has been a member of the Delaware Valley Chapter, New Jersey Chapter and Great Lakes Chapter.  He has held offices at both the DVC (Vice President, Student Activities Chair) as well as the International levels (University Relations Chair).  He has been a speaker for both local and national meetings and is a member of the Biotech Community of Practice Steering Committee, CPIP Eligibility Committee and University Relations Committee. 

 

Robert V. Pragada, is Group Vice President with Jacobs. Bob joined Jacobs in 2006 as Vice President Operations, North America Field Services.  Bob was promoted to Group Vice President of the Northern Region and Jacobs Global Pharmabio Line of Business in February 2009.  Prior to joining Jacobs, Mr. Pragada was the Chief Operating Officer of Kinetic Systems and held other executive positions globally.  He began his career in the United States Navy serving in various global assignments as a Civil Engineer Corps Officer. 

 

Mr. Pragada graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with a degree in Electrical Engineering (Control Systems) and holds a Master of Science degree in Engineering Management from Stanford University.

 

Mark B. Hassenplug is a principal in Ernst & Young's Business Advisory Services practice and is the Global Pharmaceutical Markets Leader for the Pharmaceutical Industry.  He has more than 23 years of management consulting and business advisory services experience in the areas of strategic planning, business transformation, supply chain and manufacturing operations, customer relationship management, shared services design and implementation and enterprise resource planning systems implementations.  Mark has extensive experience advising senior management on the achievement of top and bottom line growth through improvements in operations, compliance and information systems and has served clients in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, managed care, consumer products, manufacturing, high technology, oil and gas and government industry sectors.  Having conducted engagements for clients in the United States, Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia he has a unique perspective on the global issues that face multi-national pharmaceutical corporations.

 

Mark has served a number of pharmaceutical clients including Sanofi-Aventis, Schering-Plough, Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline , Bristol Myers Squibb and Novartis.

 

Kathye A. Johnson, PMP, LEED AP, Ms. Johnson is Vice President of Operations with Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc.  She is responsible for managing Jacobs Philadelphia Operation which serves as the global Center Of Excellence providing Engineering, Procurement, Construction Management and Validation services to the Pharmaceutical and BioTech Industries.  Ms. Johnson joined Jacobs in 2007.  Prior to joining Jacobs she served as Director of Reconstruction for the Department of the Army in Iraq, overseeing the $12 billion Iraq Relief and Reconstruction Program. 

 

Ms. Johnson has thirty years of Operations and Business Development Leadership in Engineering, Procurement and Construction Projects for the Power and Energy, Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Infrastructure and Commercial Buildings Industries.  Private and Public Sector experience includes the U.S. and international arenas including assignments in The Netherlands, Thailand, China and Iraq.

 

Specific expertise includes Program/Project Management, Operations Management, Strategic/Business Development, Planning and Scheduling, Estimating/Cost Engineering, Information Systems Management, Computer Integrated Engineering, Contract Management, Training, and Systems Development and Design.

 

Ms. Johnson holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School, and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Technology from Southern Polytechnic State University.
