Program Topic Summary

Project Description
Johnson & Johnson PRD, Building 42

The building known as "RC-1" during the design and construction process was occupied by PRD early in 2009 and is now called Building 42.  Housing 230 scientists, the new building aligns the laboratories serving chemistry and biology to provide for close collaboration within therapeutic areas.  Unique chemistry-based laboratories that develop compounds with potential for market are also accommodated in the new building.

J&J has consolidated small molecule research and early development at the Spring House Campus.  The project is the first phase of a long-term Master Plan that adds 155K GSF for research and early development laboratories and support to the existing 615K GSF facility.  Renovations to the Building 41 are currently underway and will transform the circa 1980 building into contemporary laboratories supporting the research operations.

The project team began work on "RC1" in 2004 and they have successfully addressed numerous issues during the process. Challenges and opportunities addressed by the team included several organizational changes within J&J, cost constraints within a very dynamic economic environment, use of BIM, evolving sustainability goals, and the existing esthetics of the campus and infrastructure.  The completed project has delivered an open collaborative working environment for the research scientists, a building that enhances the esthetics of the campus, and systems that meet the Global J&J Sustainable Design goals.  This has been done within the budget and schedule and the team is confident that the project will achieve LEED Gold Certification - the first laboratory building to earn that level of certification.
