Program Topic Summary
 

 

Overview on Sustainable Design and LEED

 

The program will begin with an overview of the key principles and definitions for sustainable design, LEED, and The U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC).  The details of how LEED affects construction projects will then be explored in greater detail.  The documentation and reporting requirements for LEED projects will be discussed, along with subcontractor education, preconstruction activities, and field activities.  The presentation will be concluded with a brief case study on a prototype LEED cGMP solid dosage facility.

Mr. Terry Jacobs
Principle Jacobs/Wyper Architects
 

Terry Jacobs is a Principal with Jacobs/Wyper Architects, LLP, the firm's practice focuses in part on cGMP manufacturing facilities, and R and Facilities  for the biotech, pharmaceutical and electronic industries and research universities - many delivered using design-build.

 

Mr. Jacobs co-founded the first AIA Philadelphia Energy Committee, and taught the first course on Energy and Architecture at Temple and Drexel Universities. He was the past chair of the Pennsylvania Regional Energy Advisory Board, and built the won several HUD solar demonstration grants.He was a visiting critic on an energy studio at the University of Pennsylvania.

 

He has won design awards from the American Institute of Architects and the Pennsylvania Society of Architects.  Mr. Jacobs co-edited a new book entitled, "Good Design Practices for GMP Pharmaceutical Facilities".  The book is a single source reference for professionals involved in the planning, construction, validation and maintenance of modern pharmaceutical facilities. He is past Chair of ISPE's International Education Committee and was president of the Delaware Valley Chapter of ISPE.  He has been a course leader and speaker at numerous IPSE courses, and a member of the ISPE since 1981. He was a past recipient of the Delaware Valley Chapters' Engineer of the Year Award.

 

Mr. Rick Warhall

Whiting-Turner Construction

 

Rick Warhall is a Vice President of The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company in New Haven, Connecticut. Rick has 27 years of experience in managing large commercial construction projects for Whiting-Turner. His most recent focus has been on sustainable construction.  Rick is a LEED Accredited Professional and serves as Whiting-Turner's coordinator for sustainable construction and the coordinator for the company's other 66 LEED Accredited Professionals. Some of Rick's sustainable/ LEED projects include; the School of Architecture & Landscape Architecture for PENN State University (LEED Gold), The Sterling Hall of Medicine C3 Renovation (LEED Gold) and the Malone center (LEED Silver) for Yale University, and the Clinical Research Building for Pfizer (LEED Silver) and the Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest Campus addition (pursuing LEED Silver).

 

Mr. Jonathan Hess

Vice-President

Whiting-Turner Construction

 

Jonathan Hess is a Vice President with The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company and has been with the company for sixteen years.  Over this sixteen year period, Jonathan has almost exclusively been involved with the construction of Biomedical Laboratories and Biotechnology facilities.  He has a wide array of experience with both public and private sector clients including The National Institutes of Health, Digene, MedImmune, Gene Logic, Food & Drug Administration, AERAS Global TB Vaccine Foundation, Baxter Healthcare, and B.I. Chemicals to name a few.  In this time he has gained extensive experience in the following areas: Research & Development Laboratories, Animal Facilities, Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical, and Biocontainment space.

 

Jonathan received his Bachelor's of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1992 and his MBA from Loyola College in 1999.

 

He is an active member of the International Society of  Pharmaceutical Engineers (ISPE), the society for Life Sciences Professionals and currently serves as President of the ISPE Chesapeake Bay Area Chapter.
